Description of Dance Types

PRE-BALLET ~ These classes are a pre-requisite to formal ballet training. Children are introduced to ballet terminology. The emphasis is on improving body awareness.

CREATIVE MOVEMENT ~ A preballet class with emphasis on having fun and recognizing terms for body parts.

BALLET ~ Classical technique class includes barre, stretching, and center combinations including turns, jumps, adajio, allegro, etc.

BALLET TECHNIQUE ~ Classical ballet technique that starts with barre variations, stretching, center adajio, and allegro combinations, and across the floor variations.

CONTEMPORARY/LYRICAL BALLET ~ A class for the more advanced ballet dancer who wants to develop the artistic, creative and expressive side of ballet. A highly poetic style that is both fluid and graceful.

POINTE ~ Strong ballet background required. Dance on toes with special shoes made for this type of dance.

TAP ~ Combinations of sounds and rhythms made with taps. Tap dancing helps to develop a quick and alert mind, as well as promoting rhythm, coordination, and musicality.

JAZZ ~ Warm-up, stretches, floor progression, and combinations with kicks, leaps and turns done to today’s contemporary music.

MODERN ~ Technique will include basic ballet incorporated into floor combinations and creative movement. Modern dance emphasizes expression and helps to give the dancer strong improvisation and choreographic skills.

HIP HOP ~ A vibrant, energetic, urban dance technique, that is fast-paced and athletic.

MUSICAL THEATRE JAZZ ~ focuses on a variety of dance styles from some of Broadway’s most famous choreographers. We begin with basic jazz technique, adding personality and character to dance routines.

JAZZ TUMBLING ~ combines the techniques of jazz dance choreography along with training in upper body strengthening, flexibility, coordination and tumbling skills. This energetic program is taught with popular music.

DANCE INTENSIVE~ an additional ballet class focusing on dance form and technique. This class works on one specific strength at a time. Students are recommended for this class on a placement basis.
